Whales!

Merry Christmas Eve to those of you who celebrate and happy Wednesday everyone else. Traditionally I use today to share my holiday cards for the year (2013, 2012), but this year they fell off of my radar. My cards are store bought and are still sitting upstairs, untouched. So instead of cards, I have something better to share, Whales and a baby!

If you follow my Instagram feed, you know that I was able to spend last weekend with my nephews and sister. We had a great time at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and visited some friends on the Eastern Shore of MD. It was an exhausting and awesome weekend!

Nephews are the best!

I also got to give my youngest nephew his christmas gift, a quilt. His older brother, Zachary, was the lucky recipient of my first quilt for his first Christmas. As soon as I saw the Preppy the Whale pattern by Elizabeth Hartman, I knew I had found the pattern for James.

I used three shades of blue/teal of Timeless Treasures Rain fabric to create a diagonal gradient of blues along with a splash of yellow and orange in the same print for the whales. I also used the orange Rain for the binding.

I am really happy with how this quilt turned out and I know that it will be used with love.

A Couple of Things

We have made it successfully to Maryland and are awaiting the arrival of our possessions. I wanted to pop in and show you a couple of things that I have finished up this summer but have not gotten their space here yet.

I made another pup, this time in a lovely orange grid, for one of my good friends and Drexel colleague who just had a baby boy. I decided to give him a more modern feel and leave the eyes and the nose off.

OrangPup_andpinsI have also been back on the SHIRTS! train, I missed out on round two this time but I have been swapping with a few people. Here are four that I made for a fellow Philly MQG member. I have a few more in progress for some Instagram friends.

Shirts_Swapx4What have you been up to this summer?

Color Block Quilt

It is baby season around here! My nephew was born two weeks ago and I have two friends that are due this month. Needless to say, baby gifts have been on the top of my to do list.

BlockQuiltFrontThis quilt is for a surprise gender baby so I had to keep the colors neutral. I do not like using pastels or traditional “baby” colors in my quilts, so this one is a bold teal and orange with a Lizzy House mouse print to keep it fun. Who could resist mice on bikes, holding flowers, and the three blind mice?

I decided to step out of my quilting comfort zone, just a little step, and quilted this with a directional point to add a bit more movement to the quilt. I found the center point and sketched the first two lines top corner to center and bottom corner to center and worked out from those points.
